FAACT’s Disaster Resource Center: Managing Food Allergies During a Disaster & Key Tips for Preparedness

As recent disasters like Hurricanes Helene and Milton have shown, natural events can strike unexpectedly, turning everyday life upside down in an instant. For families managing food allergies, these situations can be even more stressful. The uncertainty of finding safe food, the heightened risk of cross-contact, and potential challenges in accessing medications can make an already difficult situation feel overwhelming. Many of our families have had to navigate disasters with food allergies and have harrowing stories to tell. We have collaborated with many different organizations to support the food allergy community during past disasters, and that’s what inspired us to create FAACT’s Disaster Resource Center—a go-to resource to help food-allergic families to feel empowered, prepared, and supported before, during, and after a disaster.

The Disaster Resource Center offers practical tools, downloadable checklists, and resources designed to ease the burden of disaster preparedness. By creating allergy-safe Go-Bags for quick evacuation and Stay-Bags for sheltering in place, families ensure they’re ready to face a disaster confidently. Many of the disaster preparation lists are offered in different languages to assist multilingual households. We also provided links to essential government sites that specialize in disaster management—including FEMA, the Red Cross, and Ready.gov—that can offer support specific to your family’s location and needs.

Having a personalized emergency plan in place can protect your family from food allergy risks, whether you're sheltering in a community center or returning home after the immediate danger has passed. FAACT’s resources offer clear guidance so you can focus on what matters most—your family’s safety.

We know the concerns that food-allergic families face. The Disaster Resource Center provides practical, accessible tools to reduce these stressors.
