Elemental Formula Coverage

Individuals who suffer from allergies, eosinophilic disorders (EGID’s), or other diseases may be on an elemental diet, in which all or most sources of protein are removed from the diet. Individuals on elemental diets have two delivery methods: they can drink the formula, or the formula is delivered via a gastronomy feeding tube (or G-tube). Either way, it is important for health insurance carriers to cover reimbursement for all families affected.

APFED’s Guide to Formula Coverage provides helpful information for communicating with insurance companies. In addition, if your state does not have legislative mandated insurance coverage for elemental formula and you would like to help in our efforts with those states to enact legislation, please email APFED at pac@apfed.org.

States with Elemental Formula Coverage

FAACT will advocate with American Partnership for Eosinophilic Disorders (APFED) and International Association for Food Protein Enterocolitis for healthcare coverage and reimbursement of amino acid-based elemental formulas.
